Ring security devices have revolutionized the smart home security market. The Video Doorbell line, in particular, has been a hit among consumers.

These smart doorbells function as a front door surveillance camera and intercom which allows users to see and communicate with visitors at the front doorstep.

All of this is possible due to the seamless connectivity between the doorbell camera and a mobile or desktop computer device. Ring’s line of doorbell cameras allow a homeowner to easily know who is at the front door regardless of the time of day and even while away from home.

There are many reasons to install a doorbell camera, but the best of all is peace of mind. As a homeowner, it is always nice to know what is going on at home at all times.

A common question that pops up among homeowners shopping for a Ring Video Doorbell is: "Can it work without Wi-Fi?". In this article, I will answer that question along with other frequently asked questions.

Does Ring Video Doorbell Work Without a Wi-Fi Internet Connection?

Ring Video Doorbell 4 – Previous Generation

Now, let’s answer the question: Can you use the Ring Video Doorbell without Wi-Fi? The answer? No, you can’t.

Ring security devices work by connecting to a Wi-Fi network which enables the device to communicate with a smart phone, laptop, or desktop computer. In simple terms, it is through this Wi-Fi connection that you are able to take advantage of the doorbell camera’s wide range of security features.

The live or recorded video footage from the doorbell camera is sent to your smartphone through the internet. To be able to speak to a person or see who’s at the front door, the data needs to be transferred from the doorbell camera over a Wi-Fi connection.

If you remove the Wi-Fi connection from the equation, the Video Doorbell will not be able to connect to the internet and will not be able to transmit any data to your smartphone.

So, to make it clear: Yes, you need a Wi-Fi internet connection to use a Ring Video Doorbell.

Do Ring Video Doorbells Require a Subscription or Additional Fees?

Ring Video Doorbells do not require a subscription. The Ring Video Doorbell line can operate without a subscription or additional fees. However, you will be limited in how you can view video footage from the doorbell camera.

Without a subscription, you will have access to two-way audio and live video streaming. You can also receive notifications when someone rings the doorbell or triggers the motion sensor.

The disadvantage without a subscription is you will not be able to go back and review video footage if you miss a notification.
