Is Google Home Portable? Untether Your Favorite Smart Speaker

The Google Home and Home Mini are two of the more popular smart speakers on the market today. With their added convenience and functionality, it’s easy to see why.

Not only can they act as a hub to control your home automation and security devices, but with Google Assistant on board, you can set appointments, send messages, listen to music, find information on the internet, and much more.

There is one feature that the Google Home and Home Mini lack and that’s portability. They need to be plugged into an outlet to work and you’re limited in mobility by the length of its power cord.

Of course, you can always unplug the smart speaker, take it into another room, and plug it in again. And many people do use that method.

But after a while, it can get a little tedious to reach down and unplug, drag the cord around, then plug the smart speaker back in at a different location.

Thankfully, there is a new way to convert your Google Home or Home Mini into a portable smart speaker. In this article, I'll show you the options available and how you can take advantage of them.

How to Make Google Home Portable

If you already own a Google Home, you may know that the base is removable and there are interchangeable bases available that can change the color and appearance of the smart speaker.

These metal and fabric bases can give your Google Home a different look or, if you own multiple devices, can help you differentiate between them.

The bases are connected magnetically so they are easy to remove and install. You simply give a slight counterclockwise twist and you can pull the base right off.

An electronics company named Ninety7 has taken advantage of this removable base feature and offers an ingenious way to add portability to Google’s line of smart speakers.

It weighs about 14 ounces and is available in 3 different colors: carbon, copper, and snow. The LOFT takes nothing away from the Google Home’s functionality while giving you the added convenience of portability. Check prices, reviews, and more at Amazon.
