The Ring Video Doorbell 4 (link to Amazon) is the latest release in the Amazon-owned Ring line of doorbell cameras. If you’re not familiar with Ring or its Video Doorbells, they work like traditional doorbells, but have video recording cameras and smart device capabilities built into a doorbell. You can view and record videos when motion is detected at your front door and see and speak to visitors through the camera and two-way audio system.
Doorbell cameras were previously reserved for those with the means to afford cutting-edge technology, but now this technology is affordable enough to be used by anyone with a smartphone and an internet connection.

As with the other Ring Video Doorbells, the Video Doorbell 4 primarily serves as a doorbell, microphone, speaker, and video camera. In addition, the Ring Video Doorbell 4 introduces a few new features. One of the most significant updates to this iteration is the addition of color video to the Pre-Roll feature.
With Pre-Roll, the Ring Video Doorbell 4 gives you full color video footage for up to four extra seconds before the motion event was actually triggered. This allows you see exactly what happened before the motion detector was activated, which can be incredibly useful with important motion events.
Another upgrade to the Video Doorbell 4 is its improved battery life. When compared to the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus (link to Amazon), the battery in the Video Doorbell 4 lasts longer before needing to be recharged. Of course, this will vary depending upon your device settings, number of motion events, and environmental factors.
The Ring Video Doorbell 4 also gives you dual band Wi-Fi that works on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.

Ring Video Doorbell 4 - Power and Connectivity
The Ring Video Doorbell 4 can be powered with your existing doorbell wiring. It supports doorbell power sources with 8-24 VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz or 24VDC, 0.5A, 12W. The Video Doorbell 4 is also equipped with a removable, rechargeable battery pack.
As for wireless connectivity, the Video Doorbell 4 comes with enhanced dual-band wi-fi and supports 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi connection at 2.4GHz & 5GHz. Ring recommends a minimum upload speed of 2 Mbps per device.
Ring Video Doorbell 4 – Video and Audio
The Video Doorbell 4 has a 1080p HD video camera with a field-of-view of 160 degrees horizontal and 84 degrees vertical. The video camera allows for live streaming, recording, photos, and Night Vision.
Two-way audio enables you to talk and hear to through the Ring doorbell. The Ring app will use your smartphone’s microphone to let you speak to someone through your doorbell. The doorbell has built-in noise cancellation which can limit background noise or other sounds from entering your two-way conversation.
Ring Video Doorbell 4 – Motion Detection
Ring Doorbells are well known for their motion detection capabilities. You can customize virtually any aspect of the motion detection by adjusting ranges, zones, and degree of sensitivity.
The Near Zone feature allows you to set the motion detection zone within 5 to 15 feet in front of the camera. With this feature, you can cover a broad area, but also avoid motion alerts caused by vehicles or high traffic areas like sidewalks.
Motion Scheduling allows you to turn off motion detection at specific times to avoid alerts triggered by a regular occurrence. For example, if your garbage is picked up between 7:30am and 7:45am on Mondays, you can schedule your motion detection to be turned off at that time.
Motion Frequency allows you to customize motion alerts to help preserve battery life. The more alerts the doorbell sends to your mobile device, the more battery life is used. There are three Motion Frequency settings that can be adjusted through the Ring app: Frequent - doorbell captures all events (shortest battery life); Standard - motion detection takes a short break after each motion alert (medium battery life); Light - motion detection takes a longer break after each motion alert (maximum battery life).
