Over 100 million devices have been sold with Amazon’s Alexa built in. That’s a staggering number if you think about it. That was the total reported back in January 2019 and the number is only expected to grow.

There are over 150 Alexa-enabled devices currently available and new devices are rolling out every year. There's a good chance that you, or someone you know, will soon be using Alexa to play music, surf the internet, deliver the news, and control home automation and security devices.

But, back to the reason you clicked on this article.

How do you change Alexa’s wake word? There are two methods to change Alexa’s wake word. The first is to ask Alexa to change it for you. The second is to go into the device settings and change it manually.

We will cover both in this article and give you step by step instructions for each option.

How to Change Alexa’s Name

You can change Alexa's name (a.k.a. wake word) in less than 30 seconds. Here's how:

Option 1: Ask Alexa to Change the Wake Word

This is probably the easiest method. Just ask Alexa to change the wake word for you.

  1. Speak this command: “[Current Wake Word], change the wake word.”

  2. Alexa will respond: “Okay, you can choose from [list of the other wake words you are not currently using].”

  3. Respond with the wake word you want to change to.

  4. Alexa will respond: “Okay, you can call me [new wake word] in a few seconds.

And you're done. Easy peasy!

Option 2: Change the Wake Word Through the Alexa App

This option takes a few more steps, but is just as easy as the first option.

  1. Open up the Alexa app on your phone.

  2. Tap open the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines in the upper left hand corner of the screen). .

  3. Tap on Settings. .

  4. Choose the device you want to update. .

  5. Tap on Wake Word. .

  6. Choose the new wake word you want to use. .

  7. Select OK.

Keep in mind this will only change the wake word on the device you chose in step 4. If you have other devices, you will need to go through the same process to change the wake word for each of them.
